A lot of My readers know I am from Maui, but I have not released anything to the public on what I know about the Island and killer places to visit if you vacation there. You can separate your vacation from everyone elses by just knowing about some spots that will take your breath away.
So you think you have been to Hawaii just because you were once on Waikiki beach or you stayed in Honolulu. I am here to tell you, you missed Hawaii.
Most tourists want to visit the places that most people talk about. The USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, etc.. Quite sad really as over the years these places, with the exception of pearl harbor (much respect given), have become tourist traps.
You have not seen the real Hawaii until you have been to either Maui or Kauai. I will stick to Maui as I grew up there and have conquered much of the island and its surrounding waters.
Secret Spot #1 – In Hana there is a red sand beach. It has become more popular over the years, but weary tourists tend to stay away if they have heard about it as the hike to get there is a little hairy. In Downtown hana you hang a left down toward the school and soccer field. There is an old Japanese Cemetary (Its the Only one in hana so just ask if you get lost). You will see the trail along the edge of the cemetary. Just follow it until you come to red sand beach.
The Beach has gotten a little more well known over the years but most will never see its majesty. Oh, dont forget your mask and snorkel as there are some beautiful fish in the lagoon. Oh and dont bother swimming outside of the natural lava barrier, Tiger Sharks are aggresive.
Secret Spot #2 on Maui– JAWZ- Jawz is located past the 14 mile marker on the north end of Maui in Peahi. Its right past Haiku (575 area code) Isnt that a trip. Anyways, in the winter time on Maui, Jawz boasts the largest waves in the world. Some topping 70 feet tall. The surfers that talent these monsterous wonders of a wave are highly skilled and its Tow in only. They use specialized boards with footstraps and then are towed into the waves on Jet ski’s. You have to hike through pineapple fields to get there, but once you there, its awesome. Dont forget your HD Flip cam.
Stay Tuned for Secret Spot #3 and on.. I cant give it to you all at once.
